August 31_Palais Royal

Jardin du Palais Royal
Located just north of the Louvre, The garden is located within the former royal palace, Richelieu Palais Cardinale in the early 17th century . It has had a turbulent history; It started as a palace, then a childhood home of Louis XIV, a theatre and gambling house, burned down to be rebuilt as a gambling house again, and finally restored and reverted to the state between 1872 and 1876. The garden is about a third smaller than the original garden laid out for Cardinal Richelieu. In the 18th Century, uniform houses border 3 sides of this garden. Also included the Jardin du Palais Royal is the Cour d’Honneur. The courtyard, dominated by a large sculptural piece by Daniel Buren, installed in 1986. It consists of 280 black and white striped truncated columns.
