October 03_ Mont Saint Michel: The Charette for a Chateau du Sable

The Charette

The second day of the trip was dedicated to designing and building a Chateau du Sable, a “Sand Castle.” The group was split up into groups of fours, each with two American students and two French students and sent out to work.  The students were asked to develop a conceptual model of a shore side viewing and information center to be built on the shore in the sand, using the materials found on the site.  The students were also asked to consider how the spiritual effects of the sand, air and water could affect the design.  Although the weather was cold, windy and rainy for most of the day, the students spirits seem to be high and motivated.
