September 01_Biblioteque Nationale and Parc de Bercy

Bibliothèque Nationale de France

Designed by Dominique Perrault and finished in 1996, was a part of President Mitterand’s The Grands Project (a program which set out to revitalize the eastern part of Paris). It has 4 striking towers which house 12,000,000 volumes, with reference and research libraries in the central podium.

Parc de Bercy
Bercy was a former wine trading quarter east of the city center. It was once a grim area filled with warehouses, pavilions and slum housing, but now has been transformed into a modern district.  Buildings worth noting in the park are: a large venue for sports and concerts called the Palais Omnisport, Chemetov’s building for the Ministry of Finance and Frank Gehry’s Maison du Cinema et Cinematheque Francaise. As far as green spaces are concerned, Bercy provides plenty, 173 acres of it. The park contains several intimate parks with in it, for example a vineyard garden, a romantic hill garden, and a shaded trellis garden.
